Introduction To External System Errors
Return Codes and Error Messages are returned by the operating
system for various errors encountered when Collect! is requesting
the operating system, i.e. Windows, to complete a task. What are
called external error messages, are the errors that are generated
by your operating system when interacting with Collect!. These are
also called General Protection faults or GP Errors. They are
recognizable by a grey-Windows popup that has a very long
alpha-numeric error code.
Contrasted with Internal System Errors, you will see a
negative number of 1 to 4 digits followed by a letter, then
underscore, then a brief following alpha only segment.
If you receive an external error, it is important to write down
exactly what you were doing at the time you received the error and
contact Technical Services for further direction. If possible,
take a screenshot of the error message. It is important that the
user who received the error be able to provide exact information
on what they were doing with the application at the time of error
message occurrence. Details such as what menu option, what specific
screen, what specific key strokes / attempt at process. This
information is vital to assisting a technician in troubleshooting
the root cause of the problem.
To ensure your smooth system usage, if your workstation does
considerable heavy processing of data imports and
other batch processes, DO reboot your workstation
every couple of days. RAM memory gets used up and
not released by some of these processes and it is
possible to get a Windows GP Memory error when you no
longer have enough available RAM to run a process.
